Artistic Statement
My plays explore teenagehood and young adulthood, particularly expectations for teen girls and young women. All too often teenage girls are demeaned in popular media. In my own work I am interested in exploring teen girls in all their complexities, not merely as one-dimensional figures meant to provide comic relief. My goal is to ensure that my audience is laughing along with my teen characters, not just at them.
Artistic Bio
Maria I. Arreola (she/her) is an emerging Chicana playwright and filmmaker from the suburbs of Illinois. Previously, she served as the 2022-2023 Peter F. Sloss Artistic Fellow at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. She is an alum of 24 hour Plays: Nationals, as well as a 2021 Sewanee Writers' Conference Scholar. She's had her work developed at various theaters, including Subtext Studio Theatre Company, SFBATCO, Danztheatre, PlayGround-Chicago, Definition Theatre, Pocket Theatrics, and KCACTF. Maria is currently an Artistic & Administrative Apprentice at The Playwright's Center.
